Electron dot structure :

An ionic bond is formed by the transfer of an electron from the sodium atom to the chlorine atom.

Sodium chloride exists as a crystalline solid in which the Na+ and Cl ions are closely packed in space. Since the attractive forces among the ions are quite large, the compound has a very high melting point.
