  2. Because there is only one Carbon atom in this chain, the root word will be "Meth."

  1. In the given chain the one Aldehyde group is present.

Step 3: Determination of suffix and prefix:

  1. As this compound is saturated and the functional group is the Aldehyde, the suffix is “al”
  2. "Methane" is used as a prefix in IUPAC names for one Carbon atom.

Therefore, IUPAC name of HCHO is Methanal. It is commonly known as Formaldehyde.
