Question

X/4-y/6=3

X/2-y=-2

Solve for x and y

Open in App
Solution

Multiply both equation with 12 as 12 is lcm of denominator of first equation.

so equation becomes

3x -2y =36
6x-12y =-24

equate coefficient of x by multiply first equation with 2,

6x-4y=72---(1)
6x-12y=-24---(2)

subtract (1)-(2)
-4y--12y =72--24

12y-4y = 96

8y=96
y=96÷8 = 12

substituting y value in second equation,

(X÷2)-y =-2
(x÷2) = -2+ y
= -2+ 12 = 10

x=2× 10= 20

so x=20 and y=12
