Coalition Government means ________.
Government formed by two or more parties.
Power is shared among different parties having different ideologies. Some two or more parties can form an alliance while contesting the elections. If this alliance of political parties wins the elections, they form a coalition Government. In India, there is more scope for Presidential assertiveness when Governments are not stable and when coalition governments occupy power in the centre.
Various political parties have formed coalition Governments that have a majority in the Parliament. When coalition governments are formed, a leader who is most acceptable to all or most of the coalition partners is chosen as the Prime Minister. India has seen many coalition Governments since 1989. The working of the Parliamentary executives were affected by this as most of the coalition governments could not complete their full term, as they had to resign due to loss of support of the majority or the coalition governments were removed.
The frequent formation of coalition governments had led to erosion of authority of the Prime Minister as coalition governments meant it necessitated more consultations with political partners.
