Question

John and Radha were classmates since childhood. When Radha turned eleven years old, she developed a little swelling on her neck. She visited the doctor who started a medication. After a few years, John also developed a slight protrusion on his throat. He got worried and went to the doctor. But the doctor assured him that it was normal in boys when they are growing up. Can you think of any reasons for the difference in diagnoses?

Solution

For Radha, the swelling in her neck was due to the development of goiter. Whereas the protrusion observed in John's throat was Adam's apple.

Goitre:

  1. Goitre refers to the condition in which the thyroid grows more than its original size.
  2. Goitre develops when the thyroid gland does not produce enough hormone for the body and when the body does not get enough iodine from the diet.

Adam's apple:

  1. Adam's apple refers to the laryngeal prominence and is made up of the thyroid cartilage.
  2. The front end of it protrudes out and is referred to as the Adam's apple.
