Solution

Equivalent conductivity:

  • The equivalent conductivity of a solution is known as the conducting power of all the ions which are generated by dissolving one gram equivalent of an electrolyte into the solution.
  • It is generally expressed as λ .

Equivalent conductivity of NaCl Solution:

Step 1: Given data:
The conductivity Of 01NNaOH solution is given as = 0.022s/cm

The Volume Of Solution added to the given solution = 0.1NHCl

The specific conductance κ is given as= 0.0055s/cm

Step 2: Formula for calculating equivalent conductivity:

We can calculate the equivalent conductivity by using the formula:
λ=κ×V ;

where κ is the specific conductance

and Vis known as the volume in mLthat contains one gram equivalent of an electrolyte.

Step 3: presenting equivalent conductivity in terms of Normality:

The normality of a solution is given as the ratio of the number of gram equivalents of the solute and the volume of the solvent in litres.

Thus normality can be expressed as:
N=neV(incc)×1000.

Here the number of equivalents for NaCl solution is1, ne=1.
Thus, V=1000N.
Substituting the value of Vin the formula of equivalent conductivity, we can get :
λ=κ×1000N

Step 4: Calculating normality of NaCl solution:
NaCl is formed by the mixture of the two solutions i.e NaOH and HCl

Here the normality of the NaCl solution can be calculated as = 0.12N

This is due to the presence of two ions coming fromNaOH and HCl.

Step 5: Calculating equivalent conductivity:

By inserting the given values in the formula for equivalent conductivity we can get:
λ=0.0055×10000.12λ=110
Thus, the equivalent conductivity in scm/equivalent of NaCl solution is110scm/equivalent.
