Write a note on adaptation in plants and animals in the desert.

Adaptation:

  1. Adaptation refers to changes in physical and behavioral traits.
  2. Allows organisms to survive and reproduce in a particular habitat.

i) Adaptations of plants in the desert:

  1. Succulents can hold water with modified stems and leaves.
  2. Long deep roots absorb water from the ground.
  3. For energy conservation plant becomes shorter.
  4. Cactus spines (modified leaves) prevent loss of water.

ii) Adaptations of animals in the desert:

  1. Animals such as kangaroo rats found in the desert never drink water.
  2. Ability to concentrate its urine to conserve water.
  3. Desert lizards bask in sun and burrow in the sand (afternoon) to escape the heat of the day.
  4. These adaptations prevent the loss of water in desert animals.
