Question

A body starting from rest is travelling on a straight road with constant non-zero acceleration. If the speeds after covering distances S1 and S2 be V1 and V2 respectively. If V2/V1=2, then S2/S1=N. Find N.

Solution

Solution
(i) While covering S1 distance
u=0m/s and V=V1, so,
Applying third eqn of motion,
(V1)2(0)2=2(S1)(a)
(V1)2=2S1aV1=2S1a
(ii) While covering S2 distance,
u=V1m/s and V=V2m/s. so,
Applying third eqn of motion,
(V2)2(V1)2=2(S2)(a)
(V2)2=2S2a+V21
V22=2(S1+S2)a
V1=2(S1+S2)a
As V2V1=2 Let V1=K, then V2=2K
so, V1=2S1aS1=V212aS1=K22a
Also, S1+S2=V222aK22a+S2=V222a
S2=4K22aK22a=3K22a
So, S2S1=3N is 3.
