Question

a bullet of masd 50g moving with an intial velocity 100m/s,strikes awooden block and comes to rest after penetrating a distance 2cm in it .calculate: 1)initial momentum of the bullet 2) final momentum of rhe bullet , 3)retardation caused by the wooden block ,and 4) resistive force exerted by the wooden block

Open in App
Solution

initial momentum = m*u = 0.05 kg * 100 m/s = 5 kg m/s.
final momentum = m*v = 0.05 kg * 0 m/s = 0 kg m/s
s (in m) = 0.02 m.
acceleration = (v^2 - u^2)/2*s = (0 - 10000)/2*0.02= -250000 m/s^2. (THIRD EQUATION OF MOTION) (v^2 -u^2 = 2as)
retaradation = - acceleration= 250000 m/s^2.
resistive force = m(of bullet) * acceleration = 250000 * 0.05 =12500 N (in the backward direction)
