Question

An intimate mixture of ferric oxide, Fe2O3, and aluminium, Al, is used in solid fuel in rockets. Calculate the fuel value (in kcal) per cc of the mixture. Heats of formation and densities are as follows :

Data given : ΔHf (Al2O3)=399 kcal/mol, ΔHf (Fe2O3)=199 kcal/mol, density of Fe2O3=163 gm/cc, density of Al = 2.7 gm/cc.

Solution

2Al+Fe2O32Fe+Al2O3

ΔH=399(199)=200 kcal
Volume of fusion mixture =542.7+160163=50ml
50 ml mixture produces 200 kcal
1 ml mixture produces =20050=4 kcal.
