Isotonic solution: When the concentration of the cell and that of the medium in which the cell is kept in the same, then such a solution is called an isotonic solution. [1 mark]

Hypotonic solution: When the concentration of the water in the cell is less than that of the water in the surrounding medium in which the cell is kept, such a solution is called a hypotonic solution. [1 mark]

Hypertonic solution: When the concentration of the water in the cell is more than that of the concentration of water in the surrounding medium then such solution is called a hypertonic solution.[1 mark]
