Question

Do bonding molecular orbitals have nodes?

Open in App
Solution

Bonding molecular orbitals:

  1. Bonding molecular orbitals are formed by the interaction of orbitals of the atoms with the same symmetry.
  2. They are lower in energy than atomic orbitals of an atom hence they have higher stability.
  3. Nodes are points or planes in orbitals where the electron density is zero.
  4. Generally, the presence of electrons is observed in the most stable states.
  5. Therefore, bonding molecular orbitals do not have nodes.
