Question

Electrons are emitted with zero velocity from a metal surface when it is exposed to radiation of wavelength 6800 Å. Calculate threshold frequency ( v0 ) and work function ( W0 ) of the metal.

Open in App
Solution

Threshold wavelength of radiation (λ0)=6800A=6800×1010m
Threshold frequency (v0) of the metal
cλ0=3×108ms16.8×107m=4.41×1014s1
Thus, the threshold frequency (v0) of the metal is 4.41 × 1014s1.
Hence, work function (W0 ) of the metal = hν0
= (6.626 × 1034 Js) (4.41 × 1014s1 )
= 2.922 × 1019 J
