How will you classify nerves based on their function?
The nervous system is the main mechanism of control and coordination in our body, and is composed of the brain, spinal cord and the nerves.
A nerve is a yellowish-white structure, and emerges from the brain and the spinal cord. It is responsible for transporting information in the form of nerve impulse to its fixed destination.
Nerves can be classified into three types based on their route of passing information
Motor nerve: This type of a nerve is responsible for carrying information from the central nervous system to different sense organs. eg oculomotor nerve
Sensory nerve: This type of nerves carries messages from the sense organs to the central nervous system. eg optic nerve
Mixed nerve: This type of nerve can pass messages in a bidirectional fashion. It can act as motor as well as a sensory nerve. eg trigeminal nerve
