Question

Is hybridisation a result of interference? If an atomic orbital is hybridised then does the orbitals interfere with each other and produce a new shape?

Open in App
Solution

Since the electrons are in-phase whenever hybridisation takes place and a bond is formed, the interference is constructive in nature. The shape of hybridised orbital is usually different from that of the orbitals getting hybridised. The difference in shape is maximum in case of sp2 and sp3 hybridisation where the two perpendicular p orbitals bend and two overlaps.
