Question

A girl weighing 50kg is standing on a pencil heels. Each having an area of cross section 1 cm2

. An elephant weighing 200 kg and foot area of cross section of 250 cm2 standing on the floor. Which of the two exerts more pressure on the floor? (given accelaretation due to gravity = 10 m/s2)

Solution

We know pressure = force/area

and force = weight = mg

1.

Force due to the elephant = 2000kg x 10m/s2

Area on the ground = 250 cm 2 = 0.025 m2

Pressure due to the elephant = 20000/0.025 = 800,000 Pa

2.

Force due to the girl = 50kg x 10m/s2 = 500 N

Area on the ground = 1 cm2 = .0001 m2

Pressure due to the girl = 500 / 0.001 = 5000,000 Pa

thus,

the girl exerts more pressure than elephant
