A mixture of formic acid oxalic acid is heated with conc. h2so4. the gas produced is collected and on treatment with KOH solution.

When mixture of acids are treated with conc. sulphuric acid, the acid acts as dehydrating agent. The following reactions takes place:
Formic acid-
HCOOH Heatconc.H2SO4 H2O + CO(g)

Oxalic acid-
C2H2O4 Heatconc.H2SO4 H2O + CO(g) + CO2(g)

The carbon dioxide produced can be collected on treatment with KOH solution in the form of potassium carbonate.
2CO2 + 2KOH 2KCO3(s) + H2
