$2 x + 5 y = 1$ ----(1)

$2 x + 3 y = 3$ ----(2)
No need for cross multiply because coefficients of x are already same
(1) - (2)
$2 x - 2 x + 5 y - 3 y = 1 - 3$
$0 x + 2 y = - 2$
$y = - 1$

so
$2 x + 5 (- 1) = 1$ (from first equation)
$2 x - 5 = 1$
$2 x = 6$
$x = 3$
