Question

What is suspension? Give its three properties.

Open in App
Solution

Suspension:

  1. A suspension is a heterogeneous combination in which tiny solid particles are dispersed throughout a liquid but do not dissolve in it.
  2. Solid particles in a suspension stay separated unlike in a homogeneous medium and do not settle to the bottom or rise to the top.
  3. The particles might be solid or liquid, and of the same or different materials.
  4. Examples of suspension: Chalk+water, muddy water, sand+water, flour+water, etc., are examples of suspension.

Properties of suspension:

  1. A suspension is a heterogeneous mixture.
  2. In a suspension, the size of the solute particles is relatively enormous. It has a diameter of more than 100 nm.
  3. The particles of a suspension don't pass through a filter paper. So a suspension can be separated by filtration.
  4. A suspension is unstable as the particles of suspension settle down when left undisturbed.
  5. The particles of suspension scatter a beam of light passing through it and make its path visible.
