Solution

The distribution of the population as per the different types of occupation is known as the occupational structure.

Classification of occupation

Occupations are classified as listed below

  1. Primary: Primary activities include agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry, fishing, mining and quarrying, etc
  2. Secondary: Secondary activities include the manufacturing industry, building and construction work, etc.
  3. Tertiary: Tertiary activities include transport, communications, commerce, administration and other services.

Relationship between development and occupational structure

Development is related to the occupational structure of the population.

  • A higher percentage of the population is involved in primary occupations like agriculture, animal husbandry, forestry and fishing which is seen in a less developed country.
  • We observe more development in countries where people move into secondary occupations like manufacturing.
  • A greater percentage of the population involved in a tertiary occupation like Banking, commerce, transport, and administration – implies a highly developed country.
