Inspiration/inhalation is the process by which oxygen rich air is taken in through the nose and is passed on to the lungs through trachea.

Expiration/exhalation is the process during which the oxygen from the inspired air is absorbed in the blood. Also, blood carries carbon dioxide from various parts of the body and passes it towards the lungs.

Both these process of inspiration and expiration occur with the help of lungs and are referred as external respiration.
