(a) Importance of the environment
(b) Bio-technology
(c) Reserved Bio-diversity Zones.
(a) Environment is an important factor that determines the biological diversity of any geographical region. The environment changes from place to place and also in course of time. This change results in the variation in the living organisms living in the same environment. For example, aquatic organisms living in rivers, lakes, sea show great amount of variation. Also animals and plants found in deserts show great amount of variation compared to the plants found in coastal, snowbound or plain regions.
(b) Biotechnology is the integrated use of biochemistry, microbiology and engineering sciences to achieve technological application of the capabilities of microorganisms, cultured tissues, cells etc. Biotechnology has its application in agriculture, food processing industry, medical diagnostics, bioremediation, waste treatment, energy production, drug discovery etc.
(c) Reserved biodiversity zones are the areas where wildlife is protected but the local people are allowed to carry with their daily work. In these areas hunting and cutting of trees is prohibited. This includes the sanctuaries for animals also. A treaty to protect the endangered wild animals and plants came into force in 1975. This treaty regulates import and export of all kinds of wildlife. The important functions of these zones are:
(i) to help in the conservation of species and genetic variation.
(ii) to help in the economic development, which is ecologically sustainable.
