Question

Does ATP synthesis require oxygen?

Open in App
Solution

ATP synthesis:

  1. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) is the energy currency and is utilized for multiple cellular activities.
  2. Cellular respiration is the process by which ATP is synthesized and occurs by the oxidation of substrates such as carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins.
  3. During aerobic respiration, glucose is catabolized in three steps - Glycolysis, Krebs cycle, and oxidative phosphorylation.
  4. ATP formation happens in the electron transport chain via oxidative phosphorylation and this process is catalyzed by ATP synthase.
  5. Oxygen is necessary for the oxidative phosphorylation step and synthesizes ATP molecules.
  6. Glycolysis is a crucial metabolic reaction that occurs in the cytoplasm of cells. It generates energy by splitting glucose molecules.
  7. The Krebs cycle includes a series of chemical reactions that generate energy by the oxidation of acetyl-CoA from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
  8. Oxidative phosphorylation is the process in which ATP is synthesized by the movement of electrons across the mitochondrial electron transport chain.
