Solution

Blood:

  1. Blood is a fluid, flowing through the body's arteries, veins, and capillaries, providing the body with nutrition, oxygen, and waste removal.
  2. Blood has numerous cells and proteins in it, making blood "thicker" than pure water.
  3. About 95% of the body's red blood cells (RBCs) are produced in the bone marrow.
  4. The kidneys stimulate the bone marrow to produce RBCs through a hormone called erythropoietin.
  5. It has four main components: plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
    1. Plasma:
      1. Plasma makes up about 55% of blood.
      2. It is pale yellow and consists of salts, nutrients, water, and enzymes.
      3. The reticuloendothelial cells of the liver synthesize plasma proteins in adults.
    2. Red Blood Cells:
      1. RBCs are also known as erythrocytes
      2. They contain the iron-rich protein called hemoglobin, which gives blood its red color.
      3. Their main function is to transport oxygen from and to various tissues and organs.
      4. They are produced in the red bone marrow and destroyed in the spleen.
    3. White Blood Cells:
      1. WBCs, or leucocytes are colorless blood cells.
      2. They are colorless because it is devoid of hemoglobin.
      3. Their main function is immunity and defense mechanism.
      4. They are produced in the bone marrow from hematopoietic stem cells.
    4. Platelets:
      1. Platelets are tiny disc-shaped cells produced in the bone marrow
      2. They help control blood flow when any part of the body is damaged, thereby helping in the clotting of blood.
