Question

Is kinetin a cytokinin?

Open in App
Solution

Yes. Kinetin is a cytokinin.

Cytokinin

  • Cytokinin are adenine derivatives with an N6 substitution that influence many aspects of plant growth and development.
  • During the proliferation and expansion stages of leaf cell development, they promote cell division and increase cell expansion, respectively. Cytokinin reduce sugar accumulation, increase chlorophyll synthesis, and extend the photosynthetic period of leaves during senescence.
  • Eg. Kinetin, zeatin

Kinetin

  • Because of its ability to induce cell division in the presence of auxin in the medium, it was given the name kinetin.
  • Kinetin is frequently used in plant tissue culture to induce callus formation and to regenerate shoot tissues from callus (in combination with auxin) (with lower auxin concentration).
