To determine the largest possible number of cartons needed, we have to find the greatest common factor of 12, 16, and 32 using ladder method.

So, let us write all 3 numbers on the horizontal line and divide these numbers using a prime number which exactly divides all the three numbers.


Write quotients in the next line.

Repeat the process until all the numbers are divisible by a prime number.


Now, to obtain the GCF, we multiply all the divisors.

So, GCF of 12, 16, 32 = 4

∴ At most 4 cartons are required to pack the fruits equally such that no fruit is left behind.
