Question

A mercury thermometer is used to measure within temperature range 0100 C. Internal diameter of the glass tube is 0.4 mm and the distance between 0 C and 100 C points is 21 cm . The coefficient of volume expansion of mercury is 0.0002/C. and the coefficient of linear expansion of glass is 0.000008/C . Assume that temperature variation takes place only of the bulb portion and temperature of the mercury inside remains homogenous. The internal volume of the bulb at 0C is

Solution

The correct option is C 1.5 cm3
Given: Ym=0.0002/ C,αg=0.000008/ C, ΔT=100C, r=0.2 mm, l=21 cm Yg=3 αg=3×0.000008=0.000024/ C

Volume of the mercury in tube at 100C= Volume of mercury overflown from the bulb.

(πr2)l=V0(YmYg)ΔT

V0=π×0.022×21(0.00020.000024)×100

V0=227×4176×21=1.5cm3
Final answer (a)
