Question

As shown in figure, light is incident normally on one face of the prism. A liquid of refractive index μ is placed on the horizontal face AC. The refractive index of prism is 3/2. If total internal reflection taken place on face AC, μ should be less than l34, where l is an integer. Find the value of l.

Solution

Critical angle, θc between glass and liquid,

sinθc=μ(3/2)=2μ3....(1)

Light ray will pass the surface AB without bending since it is incident normally.

As, it strikes the surface AC at an angle of incidence i=60.

For Total internal reflection (TIR) at the face AC, angle of incidence must be greater than the crtical angle . i.e. i>θc

Taking sin both sides,

sin60>sinθc

Substituting the value of sinθc from equation (1), we get

32 >23μ μ<334

From the data given in the question,

μ<l34

Comparing both we get , l=3.
Why this Question :
This question will enhance the ability of solving critical problems on TIR and this problem provides conceptual understanding to solve similar problems for JEE.
