  1. [FeCl4]-has tetrahedral geometry.

  2. Co(en)(NH3)2Cl2+has 2 geometrical isomers.

Solution

The correct option is C

FeCl4-has higher spin-only magnetic moment thanCo(en)(NH3)2Cl2+.

The explanation for the correct option:

(A) FeCl4-

  1. Since Cl- is a weak field ligand.
  2. So it can't pair the free electrons.
  3. Hence FeCl4- is sp3 hybridized and tetrahedral.

(C) As we can see from the above diagram FeCl4- has n=5 unpaired electrons, hence

spin only magnetic moment =n(n+2=5(5+2μ=5.92BM

  1. For Co(en)(NH3)2Cl2+ , NH3 is a strong field ligand for Co+2 .
  2. Hence all electrons become paired.

From the above diagram, it is clear that Co(en)(NH3)2Cl2+ have d2sp3 hybridization and geometry are octahedral and the number of unpaired electrons is 0

μ=n(n+2=0(0+2)μ=0

Therefore, FeCl4- have tetrahedral geometry and has a higher spin only magnetic moment than Co(en)(NH3)2Cl2+

The explanation for the incorrect option:

(B) There are three geometrical isomers possible for Co(en)(NH3)2Cl2+ as seen in the below diagram:

Hence, option (B) is incorrect.

(D) The above option (A) explanation shows that Co(en)(NH3)2Cl2+ have d2sp3 hybridization. Hence option (D) is incorrect.

Therefore, options (A) and (C) are correct.
