A scale tells a ratio between the actual distance on the map to the actual distance on the ground. It helps us to get the correct proportions and tell us the exact distance and extent of the area that is represented.

Scales can be represented in three methods:

• Statement Scale
• Representative Fraction
• Linear or Graphical Scale

A statement scale is given in the form of a verbal statement on the map.

A representative fraction describes the proportion or ratio of the map distance and the ground distance in numbers.

A linear/Graphical scale is a line divided into equal parts along with units.
