Question

Define wheatstone bridge.

Open in App
Solution

  1. A wheatstone bridge, also known as the resistance bridge, can be defined as an electrical circuit in which an unknown electrical resistance can be measured with the help of two different legs belonging to a bridge circuit.
  2. Wheatstone bridge calculates the unknown resistance by balancing two legs of the bridge circuit. One leg includes the component of unknown resistance.
  3. The wheatstone bridge works on the principle of null deflection, i.e. when PR=QS,the galvanometer shows no deflection. It means that the current through the branch bc is zero.

Applications of wheatstone bridge

  1. The wheatstone bridge is utilized for measuring very low resistance values accurately.
  2. A Wheatstone bridge beside an operational amplifier is used to measure the physical parameters like temperature, strain, light, etc.
  3. One can also estimate the quantities of capacitance, inductance, and impedance using the variations on the wheatstone bridge.
