Question

Differentiate between biopolymers and biodegradable polymers and give examples of each type.

Open in App
Solution

Biopolymers
  • These are polymers produced by living organisms (say polymeric biomolecules).
  • They contain monomeric units that are covalently bonded to form larger structures.
  • They are polymers of amino acids and carbohydrates linked together with peptide or glycosidic linkage or phosphodiester bonds.
  • There are mainly 3 classes of biopolymers.
  • (a) Polynucleotides
  • (b) Polypeptides
  • (c) Polysaccharides
  • Example: Starch, proteins, peptides, DNA, RNA, etc.

Biodegradable polymers
  • These polymers are either natural or man-made.
  • These polymers break down after its intended use into simple natural by-products such as gases and water.
  • These polymers largely consist of ester, amide and ether functional groups.
  • Ex: PHBV (Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate-c-β-hydroxyvalerate), Nylon 2-nylon 6.
