Biopolymers
- These are polymers produced by living organisms (say polymeric biomolecules).
- They contain monomeric units that are covalently bonded to form larger structures.
- They are polymers of amino acids and carbohydrates linked together with peptide or glycosidic linkage or phosphodiester bonds.
- There are mainly 3 classes of biopolymers.
- (a) Polynucleotides
- (b) Polypeptides
- (c) Polysaccharides
- Example: Starch, proteins, peptides, DNA, RNA, etc.
Biodegradable polymers
- These polymers are either natural or man-made.
- These polymers break down after its intended use into simple natural by-products such as gases and water.
- These polymers largely consist of ester, amide and ether functional groups.
- Ex: PHBV (Poly-β-hydroxybutyrate-c-β-hydroxyvalerate), Nylon 2-nylon 6.
