Question

Differentiate between filtration and decantation.

Open in App
Solution

Filtration

Decantation

  • It is used to separate insoluble solids from a liquid mixture by using a filter.
  • It is the separation of the top layer of liquid by pouring it out after the solids have settled at the bottom.
  • Filter is used to separate insoluble solids.
  • Filter is not required to separate insoluble solids.
  • When the mixture is passe through a filter, the solids are left behind on the filter.
  • When the mixture is allowed to rest for sometime, the insoluble and heavier impurities settle at the bottom (sedimentation).
  • It is a more effective process as all the solid is left behind on the filter.
  • It is less effective, as some solids can get mixed with the water while pouring it out (decantation)
