It is used to separate insoluble solids from a liquid mixture by using a filter.
It is the separation of the top layer of liquid by pouring it out after the solids have settled at the bottom.

When the mixture is passe through a filter, the solids are left behind on the filter.
When the mixture is allowed to rest for sometime, the insoluble and heavier impurities settle at the bottom (sedimentation).
