Question

Does ethanone exist? How does its structure look like

Open in App
Solution

No, a ketone needs to have a carbonyl group bonded to two other carbon atoms. Given that a carbonyl group already contains a carbon atom (C=O), this means the smallest ketone molecule is one that is 3 carbons long, whereas the eth- series are only 2 carbons long.

The nearest you can get is ethanal (acetaldehyde) CH3-HC=O, but thats an aldehyde rather than a ketone.
