Question

Does photosynthesis make ATP?

Open in App
Solution

Photosynthesis:

The method through which green plants and some other creatures produce nutrients from carbon dioxide and water using sunshine. In most cases, the green pigment chlorophyll is used in photosynthesis in plants, which produces oxygen as a byproduct.

  1. During the light response of photosynthesis, ATP is produced through the process of photophosphorylation. ATPs are produced on the stromal side of the thylakoid membrane.
  2. The light energy is taken up and stored in the high-energy molecules ATP and NADPH. Since the ATP and NADPH so produced are utilized in the dark reaction to produce carbohydrates, there is no net gain in ATP from photosynthesis.
  3. In the six cycles of the Calvin cycle, 18 ATP and 12 NADPH molecules are utilized to produce one glucose molecule.

Hence, Photosynthesis make ATP.
