Question

Draw the electron dot structure of MgCl2.

Open in App
Solution

Electron dot structure:-

  1. These are basically the diagrams which are also known as Lewis structures.
  2. These structures will show the bonding between the atoms of the molecule.
  3. This will also show the lone pairs of electrons in a molecule.
  4. Electron dot structure of MgCl2: As Mg has 2 valence electrons and it is metal too.
  5. So, Mg will lose two electrons for the formation of Mg2+ion.
  6. As Cl atom has 7 valence electrons and is a halogen, it will gain one electron from and form an Cl-ion.
  7. So, two Cl atoms would be required for the complete formation of MgCl2.
