Respiratory system:

  1. The respiratory system in humans includes the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs and diaphragm.
    1. Nose:
      • The two openings in the nose are known as nostrils that lead to the nasal chamber.
      • It has a hairy lining to prevent dust particles from reaching into the lungs.
    2. Pharynx:
      • The pharynx is the narrow tubular part which acts as a common passage for food and air.
      • The air inhaled through the nostrils passes into the pharynx and then enters the air tube called the trachea.
    3. Larynx:
      • The larynx is a thin-walled tubular structure present in the neck region which is known as the voice box.
    4. Trachea:
      • The larynx is followed by a long tubular structure known as the trachea or windpipe.
    5. Bronchi:
      • The trachea posteriorly divides into two main structures known as primary bronchi and secondary bronchi.
    6. Lungs:
      • Lungs are the chief respiratory organs where the exchange of gases takes place.
      • It is a pair of spongy, elastic organs that lies in the thoracic cavity.
    7. Diaphragm:
      • It is a large, dome-shaped, muscular organ that separates the thoracic cavity and abdominal cavity.
      • It plays a significant role in the process of breathing.
