Question

Write reaction between Ester of formic acid and Grignard reagent

Open in App
Solution

Grignard Reagent:-

  • A Grignard reagent is an organomagnesium Halide having a formula of RMgX, where X is a Halogen(-Cl,-Br,or-I), and R is an alkyl or aryl (based on a Benzene ring) group.

Reaction between the Grignard reagent and Methyl formate:

  • Methyl Formate, also called Methyl Methanoate, is the Methyl ester of Formic acid. The simplest example of an ester.
  • Methyl Formate on reaction with excess Grignard reagent followed by the hydrolysis gives a secondary alcohol.

Thus, the product of the reaction between Ester of Formic acid and Grignard reagent is a secondary alcohol.
