Explain :

Energy, work, potential energy, kinetic energy

Solution

Energy:

The ability to do work is called energy. Every person has different energies. For example: A 25 year old man can easily remove the table from its position but same work cannot be done by a 5 year old baby. So, we can say that energy is required to do work.

Work:

Scientifically, work is defined as the product of the force and displacement in the direction of force on an object.

If you lift the book to a certain height, then a force is exerted against gravity, which displaces the book. Hence, one can say that work is done on the book against the force of gravity.

Potential energy:

It is energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position or configuration.

Potential energy possessed by a body by virtue of its configuration is known as elastic potential energy.

Potential energy possessed by a body by virtue of its position with respect to the ground is known as gravitational potential energy.

Expression for the gravitational potential energy,

PE = mgh

Where, m = mass of the body

g = acceleration due to gravity

h = height of the object from the Earth

Kinetic energy:

A body possesses kinetic energy by virtue of its motion. A moving arrow can be embedded into an object. Hence, it is said that the arrow possesses kinetic energy.

Expression for kinetic energy:

K = (1/2)mv2

Where m = mass of the object

v = speed of the object
