Question

Explain how a gold leaf electroscope is used for detection of charge on a body.

Solution

Charge identification by an electroscope:

  1. Take a negatively charged electroscope. Now touch the test conductor to the brass disc of the electroscope.
  2. If the metallic leaves of the electroscope diverge further then this indicates that the test conductor carries a charge of the same nature.
  3. In other words the test conductor is negatively charged.
  4. But if the leaves of the electroscope come closer or collapse, then the test conductor carries the charge of the opposite nature or it is positively charged.
  5. The same test can be performed using a positively charged conductor.
