Solution

Hydrogenation:

  • A chemical reaction between molecular hydrogen and an element or compound, ordinarily in the presence of a catalyst is called hydrogenation.
  • In hydrogenation, hydrogen gets attached to a double or triple bond connecting two atoms in the structure of the molecule.
  • Generally, the catalyst used in hydrogenation are Ni,Pd,Pt.
  • Hydrogenation is generally carried out at lower temperatures.
  • It is used to preserve raw materials or ingredients such as Alcohol, Ammonia, various polymers, etc.
  • Hydrogenation is a process used to convert vegetable oil from a liquid to a solid or semi-solid fat.

Example: Hydrogenation of Cyclohexene(C6H10) to Cyclohexane(C6H6)

C6H10Cyclohexene+H2HydrogenPdC6H12Cyclohexane
