Respiration is a chemical process of breaking down of food particles in the cells in presence of oxygen and release energy.
Respiration completes in two stages, namely inspiration and expiration.
Inspiration:
The process of taking air rich in oxygen from the atmosphere is called inspiration.
During inspiration ribs are lifted up and diaphragm flattened, this increases the volume of thoracic cavity. This helps in the inhale of oxygen.
Expiration:
The process of giving out of carbon dioxide is called expiration.
During expiration, ribs move downward and inward to its original position and diaphragm moves upward back to its dome shaped. So that the volume of thoracic cavity decreases.
This pumps out the carbon dioxide to the atmosphere from the lungs.
