Question

Explain the process of sedimentation and decantations?

Open in App
Solution

Sedimentation:

  • Sedimentation is a separation method that is used to separate solid-liquid mixtures in which particle sizes vary from each other.
  • In sedimentation the mixture is allowed to stand due to which solid particles settled down which is called sediments.
  • The clear liquid formed on top above the sediments, is called supernatant.
  • For example, the mixture of sand and water.

Decantations:

  • Decantation is the process of separation of liquid from solid and other immiscible liquids
  • It is the process of removing the clear liquid at the top above from sediments or liquid below.
  • The clear supernatant liquid is poured into another container without disturbing the sediments.
  • This process can also be used to separate two liquids that do not mix with each other.
  • For example oil and water.
