Question

Explain the shape of BrF5.

Open in App
Solution

In BrF5 molecule:

Number of bond pairs = 5

Number of lone pairs on central atom = 1

So, BrF5 molecule is surrounded by six electron pairs. Hybridisation of Br atom in this molecule is sp3d2. Five positions are occupide by F atoms forming sigma bonds with sp3d2 hybrid orbitals and one position occupied by lone pari. So, the molecule has a square pyramidal shape.
