Solution

Step 1: Working Principle of a SONAR

How Does SONAR Work | Sound Navigation | DK Find Out
  1. SONAR stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging
  2. It is a device that uses the laws of reflection of waves.
  3. It consists of a transmitter that transmits high-frequency signals.
  4. When these transmitted signals face an obstacle, it bounces off or reflects back from the surface of these obstacles.
  5. A receiver in the SONAR device receives the signal and measures the time taken by the signal to travel back after it was released.
  6. The detector then converts the waves into electrical signals which are properly interpreted.
  7. Using the known frequency of the signal and the measured time taken, the distance or depth between the SONAR device and the obstacle is calculated.

Step 2: Applications of SONAR

  1. SONAR is mainly used in ships and other water transports to measure the depth or detect some object in the sea bed.
  2. It is also used for navigation purposes.
  3. It is used to detect lost shipwrecks under the ocean.
