Question

Explain, why a sharp knife cuts more easily than a blunt knife?

Open in App
Solution

  1. A sharp knife has a smaller contact surface area and hence applies more pressure.
  2. We know that pressure is inversely proportional to the area of the surface in contact.
  3. A sharp knife has a lesser contact surface area than a blunt one, so, a sharp knife applies a greater pressure when used for cutting.
  4. This is why it cuts better.
