Solution

The correct option is D

No definite volume definite shape and are highly compressible

Definition:

Matter: Anything or everything which occupies space, possesses mass, and offers resistance to any stress applied
on it is called matter.

Specific property determines the physical state of matter.

  1. The forces of attraction between the particles are strongest in solids, less strong in liquids, and negligible in gases.
  2. The inter-particle spaces or distances between the particles are minimum in solids, a little more in liquids, and maximum in gases.
  3. The movement of particles is minimum in solids, more in liquid, and maximum in gases.

The explanation for the correct option:

Options (D):

Gases have no definite volume and shape and are highly compressible. Example: Air, oxygen, carbon dioxide, steam, etc.,

  1. Gases have neither a fixed shape nor a fixed volume. Hence, they do not have fixed boundaries.
  2. They can flow in all directions and can be easily compressed.
  3. In a given space, the number of particles in gases is less than that in solids and liquids.
  4. The constituent particles of gases have maximum kinetic energy,
because of the presence of large inter-particle spaces between them and therefore, they show a random
motion by moving in all directions.

The explanation for incorrect options

Option (A):

Solids have a definite volume, and definite shape, and are not compressible. Example: Wood, sugar, rocks, minerals, sand, iron, etc.,

Option (B):

Liquid has definite volume but no definite shape and is compressible. Example: Water, milk, petrol, alcohol, etc.

Therefore option (D) is correct.
