Question

Give an example of a polymeric polysaccharide that only has one monosaccharide type.

Open in App
Solution

Polymeric polysaccharide:

  1. Polysaccharides are one of the most common types of biomolecules.
  2. They're lengthy carbohydrate molecules made up of numerous smaller monosaccharides.
  3. These complex bio-macromolecules provide energy to animal cells and are a structural component of plant cells.
  4. Depending on the monosaccharide type, it can either be a homopolysaccharide or a heteropolysaccharide.

Example:

  1. Cellulose is a monomeric polysaccharide with a single monosaccharide type.
  2. This is one of the most widely distributed organic compounds in the plant kingdom.
  3. It is one of the most important components of plant cells.
  4. These are polysaccharides that have solely -D-glucose units and are linked by a glycosidic bond between the first carbon of one glucose unit and the fourth carbon of the following glucose unit to form a straight chain.
