Given alongside is an experiment intended to demonstrate the action of diaphragm, but something has gone wrong.

What is the mistake in the diagram? Explain.

Solution

The mistake in the diagram is that when the sheet is pushed upwards, the volume of the rubber balloons inside the bell jar does not increase as shown in the diagram, instead it decreases.

The pressure increases and the balloons should collapse as the air rushes out.
The arrow pointing inward direction is also wrong as it should be expiration.
The balloon represents the two lungs.
