Female reproductive system

The human female reproductive system consists of two ovaries, fallopian tubes (oviducts), uterus, cervix, vagina, and accessory genital gland and mammary glands.

Ovary

  1. Each ovary is almond-shaped measuring about 3 cm, 2 cm, and 1 cm in length, width, and thickness respectively.
  2. Each ovary lies near the kidney of its side.
  3. In human females, on average, every 28 days one Graafian follicle matures and ruptures releasing an ovum, but a number of follicles develop during each menstrual cycle.
  4. The remaining follicles degenerate and are called atretic follicles.

Fallopian tubes or oviducts:

  1. The place where fertilization occurs in the female reproductive system is the Fallopian tubes
  2. Fallopian tubes are part of the female reproductive tract which receives the ovum and provide an appropriate environment for its fertilization.
  3. The ovum may be fertilized by a sperm in the fallopian tube.
  4. The fertilized ovum starts ding and at the blastocyst stage gets implanted in the wall of the uterus and develops into the growing Its tumen is lined with epithelium.

Uterus (womb)

  1. The two fallopian tubes open into a strong muscular sac called the uterus.

Vagina:

  1. The uterus opens into an elastic muscular tube called the vagina through its cervix.
  2. The vagina is the copulation chamber of the female.
  3. It opens to the exterior between the urethra and the anus into the vestibule by the vaginal orifice.
